Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about tattoo pricing in Australia
How accurate is this calculator?
Our calculator uses comprehensive data from 1,200+ Australian tattoo studios and professional artists. The formula is based on actual 2025 market rates, including minimum charges ($125 AUD) and standard hourly rates ($200 AUD). However, final prices may vary based on individual artist experience and studio location.
Why do tattoo prices vary so much?
Tattoo pricing depends on multiple factors: size (larger tattoos take more time), complexity (photorealism takes 2x longer than simple designs), body placement (ribs and hands are more difficult), colour (requires 25% more time), and artist experience. Our calculator accounts for all these variables using industry-standard multipliers.
What's included in the minimum charge?
The $125 minimum charge covers essential costs for any tattoo appointment: single-use sterile equipment (needles, tubes, ink caps), sterilisation and setup time, artist consultation, and studio overhead. Even tiny tattoos that take only minutes will incur this base fee.
Do prices differ between Australian cities?
Our calculator uses the national average rate of $100-200/hour, which is consistent across major cities (Sydney, Melbourne, Perth). However, premium CBD studios may charge 20-50% more, while regional artists might charge less. Always get a quote from your chosen artist.
Is colour really more expensive than black & grey?
Yes, colour tattoos take approximately 25-75% longer to complete. The extra time is needed for colour saturation (multiple passes), blending gradients, and layering different colours. Our calculator applies a conservative 1.25x multiplier for full-colour work.
Why are placement areas like ribs more expensive?
High-difficulty placements (ribs, hands, feet, neck) have a 1.5x multiplier because: (1) client movement and pain require slower work, (2) skin quality on these areas is difficult to tattoo, and (3) these placements fade faster, requiring future touch-ups.
How do I use this estimate when booking?
Use this estimate as a starting point for budgeting and consultations. When contacting artists, mention your design size, style, and placement. Reputable artists will provide a formal quote after reviewing your specific design. Our 'Find Artists' feature connects you with verified professionals in your city.
Are day rates better value than hourly?
Day rates (6-8 hour sessions) typically range from $1,200-$1,600, which equals $150-$200/hour—similar to standard hourly rates. Some artists offer a small discount for day bookings. For large projects like sleeves, day rates can be more cost-effective.
