Week 1 Tattoo Care 2026: Day-by-Day Australian Aftercare Guide

You unwrapped your new tattoo last night, washed it gently, and barely slept. Today is day 1. The artwork looks shinier than it did at the studio, the skin is warm, and there is a small voice in your head asking the same question on loop. "Is this normal? Should this be doing that yet?"

The first 7 days of a tattoo are the period that decides everything: how saturated the colour will look, how sharp the lines will heal, whether you will need a touch-up next year. This guide is the day-by-day map you need to keep your hands off the wrong things and on the right ones. Australian aftercare context throughout, with the products you can find at Chemist Warehouse, Priceline, and Coles. Every day covered hour by hour where it matters.

Key Takeaways

  • Days 1 to 2: Weeping, swelling, redness. Wash twice a day, balm thin
  • Days 3 to 4: Tightness, mild peeling starts. Keep moisturised, no scrub
  • Days 5 to 7: Itch and flaking peak. Tap, do not scratch
  • Wash: Fragrance-free, lukewarm, under 30 seconds direct contact
  • Moisturise: Bepanthen, Hustle Butter, or QV. Thin layer, never thick
  • No: Soaking, sun, gym, fragranced products, picking, peeling
  • Yes: Walking, sleep, water, paracetamol for soreness
  • Red flag: Yellow pus, foul smell, fever or chills. Same-day GP or HealthDirect 1800 022 222

Before Day 1: The Studio Send-Off

Your artist sent you home with one of two wrap setups, and the first 24 hours depends on which.

Cling film or surgical wrap (the old way)

  • Remove after: 2 to 4 hours (per artist instructions)
  • What you see: Plasma, ink, and blood pooled under the wrap. Normal
  • What to do: Wash gently, pat dry, leave uncovered the rest of the day

Second skin (Saniderm, Tegaderm, Recovery Derm Shield)

  • Leave on: 3 to 7 days (per artist instructions)
  • What you see: Fluid pooling under the patch in the first 24 hours is normal
  • What to do: If the patch starts leaking around the edge, peel it off in the shower, wash, dry, and switch to balm-only care

The day-by-day guide below assumes a balm-only setup from day 1. If you are on second skin, skip washing and balming and just keep the patch dry and clean until you remove it (then jump to the corresponding day below for the rest of the week).

Day 1: The Weeping Day

What you see and feel

  • Redness, swelling, warmth, mild bruising in surrounding skin
  • Plasma (clear or pale yellow fluid) weeping for 12 to 24 hours
  • Mild bleeding around the edges in dense colour areas
  • Soreness rated 3 to 5 out of 10, peaks 6 to 12 hours after the session

Your day 1 routine

  • Morning: Wash with fragrance-free antibacterial wash, pat dry, thin layer of balm
  • Midday: Check the tattoo; reapply a thin balm if it looks dry
  • Evening: Wash again, pat dry, thin balm
  • Night: Sleep on clean cotton sheets; light cotton tee; avoid the tattoo being squashed

Day 1 do not list

  • Do not re-wrap the tattoo unless your artist specified
  • Do not soak, swim, or bath
  • Do not exercise beyond a slow walk
  • Do not drink heavily (alcohol thins blood and worsens swelling)
  • Do not take ibuprofen or aspirin (paracetamol only for the first week)

In a nutshell: day 1 is about keeping the wound clean and dry. The body is doing the heavy lifting; your job is to stay out of its way.

Day 2: Settling and Soreness

What you see and feel

  • Weeping mostly stopped by morning of day 2
  • Tattoo looks slightly cloudy as plasma starts to dry on the surface
  • Soreness still around 3 to 5 out of 10; bruising may bloom around the edges
  • Sleep on the second night usually easier than the first

Your day 2 routine

  • Morning: Wash, pat dry, thin balm
  • Throughout the day: 2 to 3 thin balm applications. Less is more
  • Evening: Wash, pat dry, thin balm
  • Outfit: Loose cotton; nothing that grips or rubs the tattoo

Common day 2 worries (mostly nothing to worry about)

  • Tattoo looks darker than at the studio. Normal. Scab is starting to form on top of the ink
  • Skin tightness. Normal. Your skin is contracting around the inflammation
  • Mild pulsing or throbbing. Normal in the first 48 hours
  • Small itch. Normal. Histamine is part of the healing response

Day 3: The Cloudy Stage

What you see and feel

  • Tattoo looks dull and cloudy, sometimes described as "muddy"
  • Surface feels rougher to the touch
  • Bruising visible at the edges, sometimes yellow or green tint (normal)
  • Soreness mostly gone; tightness and itch starting to dominate

Your day 3 routine

  • Morning: Wash, pat dry, thin balm
  • Midday: Balm if the skin feels dry or tight
  • Evening: Wash, pat dry, switch to a fragrance-free moisturiser if the artist allowed (QV, Cetaphil)
  • Activity: Easy bike or treadmill OK if the tattoo will not touch the equipment

Heads up: the "muddy" look on day 3 panics first-timers. It is the scab forming over your colour. Do not "rescue" it with extra balm or peel anything off.

Day 4: First Peeling

What you see and feel

  • First fine flakes start to lift, especially around the edges
  • Flakes look like dry skin and are coloured with ink (do not panic; the ink underneath is fine)
  • Itch noticeably up from day 3
  • Bruising fading; soreness usually gone

Your day 4 routine

  • Morning: Wash, pat dry, thin layer of fragrance-free moisturiser
  • Midday: Reapply moisturiser if dry
  • Evening: Wash, pat dry, moisturise
  • Itch management: Tap with the palm of the opposite hand; cool gel pack for 5 minutes if needed

What NOT to do

  • Do not peel or pick flakes off
  • Do not scrub in the shower
  • Do not switch to a fragranced lotion just because the tattoo looks "dry"
  • Do not start swimming or soaking yet

Day 5: Itch Peak

What you see and feel

  • Peeling visible across most of the tattoo
  • Itch usually peaks today and tomorrow
  • Some sections may look "shinier" or "milky" through the peeling layer
  • If you tattooed an arm or shoulder, sleeping is the easiest it has been

Itch management toolkit

  • Tap, never scratch: Open palm, light tap, 10 seconds
  • Cool gel pack: Wrapped in a clean cloth, 5 to 10 minutes max
  • Moisturiser: Thin layer of QV or Cetaphil
  • Antihistamine: Loratadine 10mg once a day if itch is keeping you awake (check with a pharmacist first)
  • Avoid: Hydrocortisone unless a doctor specifically prescribed it

Day 6: Mid-Peel

What you see and feel

  • Peeling continues; flakes get smaller and finer
  • Underlying tattoo brighter where peeling has finished
  • Itch starts to ease for most people
  • Skin around the tattoo back to normal colour and texture

Your day 6 routine

  • Wash twice: Morning and evening, lukewarm, under 10 minutes
  • Moisturise 2 to 3 times: Whenever skin feels tight
  • Outfit: Still loose cotton; no compression gear over the tattoo
  • Sun protection: If outdoors, breathable cotton cover or shade. No SPF on the still-healing tattoo yet

Day 7: First Week Done

What you see and feel

  • Most peeling done; small flaky patches in dense colour areas
  • Tattoo looks "real" again; final colour and contrast visible
  • Some pinkness around the tattoo; should be fading by tomorrow
  • Itch significantly reduced

Your day 7 routine

  • Morning: Wash, pat dry, fragrance-free moisturiser
  • Evening: Wash, pat dry, moisturise
  • Recovery day: Walk, stretch, light yoga away from the tattoo
  • Photo: Take a clear photo for your records; useful for comparing later

What is next (week 2)

  • Surface skin closed but deeper layers still settling
  • Resume light gym from day 8 to 10; full lifting from day 14
  • Pool and ocean still off limits until at least day 14 to 21
  • SPF 50+ once skin is fully closed (around day 14 to 21)

How to wash a fresh tattoo

  1. Rinse hands with antibacterial soap, dry on a clean paper towel
  2. Lukewarm water in the shower or basin; never hot
  3. Lather fragrance-free wash (QV, Cetaphil, Dr Bronner Unscented) in your hand
  4. Gently pat onto the tattoo for 20 to 30 seconds; do not rub
  5. Rinse with the back of your hand, not direct spray
  6. Pat dry with a clean paper towel; never a fabric towel for the first week
  7. Air-dry for 5 to 10 minutes before applying any balm

How to apply balm or moisturiser

  1. Wash hands again after air-drying the tattoo
  2. Dispense a pea-sized amount onto your clean fingertip
  3. Spread in a thin layer across the tattoo; you should see the skin through it
  4. Wait 2 to 3 minutes for absorption; dab any excess with a paper towel

Australian Summer Tweaks

If you tattooed during a Brisbane, Darwin, or Cairns summer, layer two extra rules on top of the standard week 1 plan.

  • Twice-daily showers OK: Both quick and lukewarm
  • Air-conditioning overnight: Keeps the bedroom under 24 degrees, prevents sweat trapping
  • Cotton sleep wear: Synthetic pyjamas trap heat against the wound
  • Sun avoidance: No SPF on the open wound; keep the tattoo shaded or covered with breathable cotton
  • Hydration: The body clears more fluid in summer; refill the water bottle twice as often

Activity Restrictions for Week 1

ActivityWhenConditions
WalkingDay 1Easy pace, avoid friction over the tattoo
Stationary bikeDay 3Clean towel on seat and bars

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my tattoo look dull and cloudy on day 3?

Because the scab is forming over the colour and the surface skin is in early peel. The "muddy" look lifts as soon as flakes shed (day 5 to 7). The colour underneath is fine.

How many times a day should I wash and balm?

Wash 2 to 3 times a day, balm 2 to 4 times a day. The balm should be thin enough that you can see the skin through it. Thick balm traps moisture and softens scabs early.

Can I sleep on my tattoo?

If you can avoid it, do. Sleep on the opposite side, on your back, or with a pillow propping the tattoo upward. Clean cotton sheets only. If the tattoo touches the sheet overnight, change the sheets within 24 to 48 hours.

Is it OK to drink coffee or alcohol during week 1?

Coffee in moderation is fine. Skip alcohol for 48 hours after the session and keep it light for the rest of the first week. Heavy drinking thins the blood and worsens swelling.

My tattoo feels hot. Is it infected?

Mild warmth in the first 48 hours is normal inflammation. Persistent heat after day 3, or heat that spreads outside the tattoo lines, is not. Same-day GP if it does not settle.

Should I cover the tattoo at work?

Only if the workplace is dusty, dirty, or unsanitary (kitchen, mechanic, construction). Use a clean non-stick dressing for the shift and remove it as soon as you leave. Office work and most retail jobs do not need a cover.

What if I tattooed somewhere I cannot reach to wash easily?

Use a partner or housemate. If you live alone, a small handheld mirror, a clean cloth flannel, and a squeezy bottle of lukewarm water make the back, ribs, and upper thigh manageable.

Bottom Line

Week 1 is the most important seven days of your tattoo's life. Stick to the wash and balm rhythm, keep the wrong things off (sun, sweat, pools, fragrance), and let the body do its work. Day 7 you should be looking at a tattoo that already feels like part of your skin, healed sharp, ready for week 2 and the long settle.
